It’s Women’s History Month!

March has been recognized as National Women’s History Month since 1981 thanks to the lobbying efforts of the National Women’s History Project (NWHP). During Women’s History Month, we recognize the victories, struggles, and stories of the women who have made our country what it is today. Each year the NWHP selects a theme to honor women who influenced and shaped our nation. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment.”

As I write this post, I think about all the amazing women of character, courage and commitment that forged the way for women in business. Today, there are 7.8 million women-owned businesses in the United States. Here at Dawson & Dawson, we are happy to be one of them.

Without the courage and drive of women like Rose Will Monroe, women entrepreneurs around the world would not have the opportunities they have today. Rose Will Monroe worked as a riveter at the Willow Run Aircraft Factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan, building B-29 and B-24 bombers for the U.S. Army Air Forces during WWII. Rose is best known as ‘Rosie the Riveter’ in the iconic “ We Can Do It ” war effort poster. To this day Rosie is a widely recognized icon for the empowerment of working women.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, “I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.” . . . You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” – Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) You Learn by Living (1960)

Do you know a woman who’s strength is making a bit of history? When you think of character, courage and commitment, who comes to mind? I know quite a few and I will be celebrating them as well as all of the strong women that continue to influence our world.

March 8, 2014 is officially International Women’s Day! There will be events held to celebrate throughout the month, check out your local newspaper to find events near you.
