International Women’s Day facts that highlight how far women have come over the years:

  • During the Women’s Suffrage Movement in New York, women became vocal about wanting equal rights.
  • This sparked other women around the world such as Denmark, The United Kingdom, Russia, and other countries to speak up for women’s rights.
  • First gathering of International Women’s Day was held in 1911.
  • In 1977, the UN Established March 8th as the official holiday for International Women’s Day
  • March is a designated month to honor women and their contributions to society
  • Honoring women began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, CA
  • Sonoma County established Women’s History Week of the week of March 8th to correspond with International Women’s Day in 1978
  • In 1980, President Jimmy Carter made an official presidential proclamation that the week of March would be National Women’s Week and then became National Women’s Month in 1987
  • According to the UN, International Women’s Day is celebrated globally to recognize women and their achievements regardless of division.
